Dancing Sleeves
2024 | Interactive Installation
The massive “sleeves” undulate like the water surface as the breeze dances through. “Dancing Sleeves'' references the movement of water sleeves in Chinese Opera which flowy movements are not only evocative of water and wind, but also a poetic and ethereal form of expression. The abstract visuals on the long flowing “sleeves” represents the five main roles of Chinese Opera, Sheng (male), Dan (female) Jing (painted face), Mo (older men), Chou (clown).
The installation was initially created for Kwai Chai Hong’s Mid Autumn Festival show to honour Chinese Opera through the lens of new media. This exhibition builds an environment to participate and reflect on the time honoured culture in the present. The use of digital technology and minimalistic appearance of Drama Queen resonates in contemporary art, bridging the quintessentially Chinese culture with modern aesthetics.
